The Fourth of July seems to have become a day for celebrations around the world – and we’re here for it✨

For Americans, it’s Independence Day. For us South Africans, however, it marks one of the biggest events on the fashion calendar: the Hollywoodbets Durban July (HDJ) 🐎

This year’s edition was bigger, bolder, and more stylish than ever. As we discussed in From Mzansi to Country: HDJ 2026 Theme Revealed, the official theme was Country Allure, and attendees brought their own unique interpretations to life in the most creative ways.

As for us? We opted for an asymmetric version of the Nomndindi Skirt, styled with a cherished chiffon shirt inherited from our beloved Mama (RIP ♥︎), stockings, and Dr. Martens-inspired boots. The result? An unapologetically all-black interpretation of Country Allure.

One of our favourite pastimes is people-watching. We love observing how people express themselves through fashion and admiring the stories they tell through their clothing. The HDJ is one of the best places for this. Of course, with thousands of attendees and a packed event schedule, it’s impossible to see every look in person. Thankfully, social media allows us to continue the fashion feast long after the event has ended.

Here are our six favourite looks from this year’s Hollywoodbets Durban July, in order of appearance above:

Thabsie in MASANGO

We’re absolutely here for the Denim Couture moment! This striking look pays homage to both denim and the bull – two iconic elements associated with Western-inspired Country aesthetics. Beyond the garment itself, we loved how much fun Thabsie appeared to have during the photoshoot. The confidence and joy translated beautifully into the final images.

Mzukisi Mbane in IMPRINT South Africa

Making his second appearance in our HDJ Fashion Faves, Mzukisi Mbane continues to prove why he is one of South Africa’s most celebrated designers.

This ensemble celebrates the spirit of Ubuntu – the philosophy of shared humanity found within our communities. Created in collaboration with Colgate, the look incorporates the brand’s signature colours through a striking print featured on a classic white suit. A thoughtful blend of storytelling, branding, and craftsmanship.

LOOTLOVE™ in SCALO

You had us at tassels! This glamorous look embraces movement, texture, and heritage in equal measure. The cascading tassels, paired with exquisite bronze-gold beading, create a couture moment that feels both powerful and playful. We simply couldn’t look away.

Trésor Riziki in Rich Mnisi

Another beautiful interpretation of Denim Couture – this time from a menswear perspective. Featuring a kimono-inspired jacket paired with full-length wide-leg trousers, this look embodies effortless glamour. It’s relaxed yet refined, contemporary yet timeless – a balance that Rich Mnisi consistently executes with excellence.

Nomvelo Makhanya in Bantu Gold

This look immediately gave us Cowboy Couture. The cow-print corset paired with gathered leather trousers creates a bold silhouette, while the oversized furry hat adds drama and personality. It’s a playful, fashion-forward interpretation of the theme that remains sophisticated and memorable.

Nkanyiso Makhanya in Marc Percy

This look had us singing, “I’m a classic man…” 🎶 Elegantly tailored and beautifully executed, this ensemble allowed us to see the actor in an entirely new light. The styling, craftsmanship, and confidence came together perfectly. Dare we say it? A fashion icon in the making. The accompanying photoshoot was equally impressive – fun, polished, and full of personality.

While there were countless beautiful interpretations of Country Allure this year, these six captured our attention and imagination the most. We love seeing designers, stylists, and fashion lovers embrace a theme while still remaining true to their unique identities…

And that’s what fashion is all about!

Always remember to embrace, celebrate, and Wear Your Uniqueness ♥︎
