Ahead of the reveal, some of my students had already seen the teaser shared on the HDJ Instagram page – and let’s say, there were mixed feelings. The idea of a “cowboy/cowgirl” theme left many unsure of what to expect. Because of this, I wasn’t surprised when the theme was announced. However, I must admit, my initial reaction wasn’t quite as excited as it was during last year’s reveal of Marvels of Mzansi✨

The reason is quite simple. Last year’s theme felt incredibly special – it was, in my experience, one of the first themes that so boldly and proudly celebrated South African identity. It felt like a turning point, a reminder that the beauty, inspiration, and wonder we often seek elsewhere already exist within us. Naturally, I hoped it would spark a continued celebration of homegrown narratives in the years to come.

That said, perhaps the opportunity lies in how we choose to interpret this year’s theme. Even with internationally inspired concepts like Country Allure, we still have the power to infuse our own stories, cultures, and perspectives into the designs we create. Fashion, after all, is not just about the theme – it’s about the voice behind the interpretation. And maybe that’s the real challenge (and beauty) of this year’s Durban July: to take a global idea and make it uniquely our own…

I’m excited to see how designers, creatives, and attendees rise to the occasion and, of course, how we continue to celebrate individuality through style. Shoutout to my students – the HDJ is your oyseter!
