Marvels of Mzansi: a celebration of South African fashion

“But we’re only in February…” – was the reaction I got when I shared the exciting news about an invitation I had the honour of accepting recently.

Well, let me tell you – this timing is intentional! We’ve been given more than enough time to prepare, perfect, and bring our creative visions to life. So, when this year’s Hollywoodbets Durban July theme was revealed as “Marvels of Mzansi”, I was over the moon! ✨

Our fashion family at Hollywoodbets hosted us for an afternoon of stylish celebrations at Greyville Racecourse, the official home of South Africa’s most anticipated fashion and racing event. And this year’s theme? It’s a poetic tribute to the beauty, culture, and innovation that define our nation.

A Theme Worth the Wait
“It’s about time!”  was my very first thought when I heard the theme announcement. It’s both exciting and bittersweet. While I’m thrilled that we’re finally celebrating the richness of South African beauty, creativity, and heritage, I can’t ignore the fact that it took global validation for us to fully embrace our own worth. But hey, progress is progress!

The beauty of this theme lies in its vastness – it offers an endless well of inspiration for designers. From our rich cultural tapestry to the vibrant artistry that runs through our history, “Marvels of Mzansi” is a call to honour what has always been extraordinary about South Africa 🎨

A Special Shout-Out
I want to take a moment to give a big shout-out to the design school I proudly represent – INSCAPE! As a fashion design lecturer at our Durban hub, I couldn’t be more excited to see my students take on this challenge.

Let’s make this year’s Hollywoodbets Durban July a masterpiece of South African fashion! To my students, I have only three words for you: Ready? Set… GO! 🚀
